Why Cement Pointing is Ruining Historic Homes in Cheltenham & The Cotswolds

Modern cement is exceptionally hard, brittle, and completely waterproof. When applied to modern cavity walls, it works perfectly. However, when you smear cement between historic, handmade Cheltenham bricks or porous Cotswold stone, you fundamentally change how the building handles moisture.

When rain hits a period property, the moisture is supposed to be absorbed slightly by the wall and then naturally evaporate back out through the softer lime mortar joints. Lime acts as a sacrificial, breathable pathway for water.

Cement blocks this pathway. When moisture gets into the wall (which it inevitably will), the waterproof cement traps it inside.

  • Severe Internal Damp: With the external evaporation route blocked by cement, the trapped moisture has only one place to go: inwards. It travels through your solid walls, eventually appearing in your living rooms as bubbling plaster, peeling paint, and black mould.
