How to Permanently Cure Damp in Historic Period Homes Without Harsh Chemicals
Discovering damp in a period property is one of the most stressful experiences for a homeowner. Whether it manifests as bubbling plaster in your Regency townhouse or a persistent musty smell in your Cotswold stone cottage, the instinct is to panic and call a modern damp-proofing company.
However, applying modern, chemical-based damp treatments to a historic building is often the exact cause of the problem—not the cure.

The Myth of Injected Damp-Proof Courses (DPCs)
Most historic homes built before the 1900s do not have a modern damp-proof course (the plastic membrane built into modern brickwork to stop water rising). Because of this, modern contractors often recommend drilling holes into your beautiful historic brick or stone and injecting a chemical silicone barrier.
This does not work for period properties. Historic solid walls were designed to absorb ground moisture and naturally release it through evaporation. When you inject a chemical barrier, you interrupt this natural capillary action. The moisture hits the chemical line, cannot evaporate, and is forced to travel even higher up your walls, pushing the damp problem into your living spaces and rotting your structural timbers along the way.
The Danger of Waterproof Tanking
The second common (and disastrous) modern "fix" is tanking. This involves painting a waterproof cement slurry over the damp internal wall and covering it with gypsum plaster.
Tanking acts exactly like wrapping your historic walls in a plastic bag. The moisture in the stone or brick is trapped. Unable to breathe, the water builds up immense hydrostatic pressure until it eventually blows the tanking completely off the wall, leaving you with a crumbling, soaking wet mess.
The Heritage Solution: Breathability
To cure damp in a period home, you do not fight the water; you manage it. You must allow the building to function exactly as its original architects intended.
Careful Extraction: The first step in our restoration process is carefully removing the damaging, non-breathable materials. We strip away the trapped gypsum plaster, chemical tanking, and exterior cement pointing that are holding the water inside the fabric of your home.
Allowing the Wall to Breathe: Once the impermeable layers are gone, the trapped moisture can finally begin to evaporate. The masonry is given time to naturally dry out and stabilize.
Applying Traditional Lime: We then restore the internal walls using traditional, multi-coat lime plaster (often incorporating insulating perlite to prevent future condensation) and repoint the exterior with highly breathable lime mortar.
Because lime is naturally vapor-permeable, any future moisture simply evaporates harmlessly into the air, completely unnoticed.
